Hannah House Services

Hannah House is more than a shelter or a facility. To the women and families who live, dream, and grow here, it's a home. Hannah House provides transitional housing for women both with and without children. We can accommodate fifteen single women and five families at a time with two different programs:

  • Our structured program, called the HERS program, focuses Hannah House clients on the areas of Housing, Employment, Recovery, and Self-Awareness. Residents of the HERS program stay six months.
  • In 1996, Hannah House introduced THEIRS, a family reunification program for five women and their children. The program combines our original program model with the areas of Togetherness and Independance. THEIRS provides our clients with comprehensive services for the development of healthy and stable families. Residents of the THEIRS program stay one year.

  • A typical resident of Hannah House is 34 years old and is actively recovering from substance abuse. The ethnic backgrounds of residents are 98% African American and 2% Other. A majority of the women have completed their education through High School. Nearly 80% of the women have children who are living with relatives or are in foster care.

Hannah House also provides the following:

  • Individual case management
  • Mental health services including individual and group therapy
  • Recovery support
  • Educational and support groups i.e. parenting, self-awareness
  • Seminars for life skills, resume writing, interviewing techniques, personal budgeting, and housing opportunities
  • Assistance in finding employment and affordable housing
  • Basic needs including food, clothing and transportation

Hannah House has served more than 1,000 women in its 20 years of existance. Three quarters of these women have gone on to continue their recovery and move into an independent lifestyle. Women from our programs have bought homes of their own, graduated from college and graduate school, served on our own Board of Directors & worked within our staff, become mentors for others, and even helped to start similar programs in other communities.

    Funding

Hannah House receives less than 50% of its total program budget from Federal and District government funds. Forty percent of our funding is from foundations and individuals. The remaining sources of income are civic and social organizations, corporations, churches and special events.
    Needs

As a non-profit organization, we are dependant upon the community for our existence. Although Hannah House receives funding from both foundations and the Government, we still need both financial and human capital from the Washington metropolitan community. Cash donations, in-kind services, cleaning supplies, toiletries, food, and furniture are always needed, as well as individuals and groups who can volunteer their time.
